Community
This
once agricultural community south of Atlanta has evolved into a
picturesque town with state-of- he-art technology, serving a growing
business and industry sector; the transition was made while
maintaining a sound economic base. Formally incorporated in 1843,
Griffin boasted three churches, an academy and a newspaper in less
than one year. As a matter of fact, in less than a decade, the 1850
census shows that Griffin’s population (2,320) rivaled Atlanta’s
(2,572).
Growth can be measured in many ways, and ours can be seen within the
school system, in how our population has continued to increase, by
the companies we attract, by the success of merchants downtown while
expanding shopping and entertainment outside the city, and by the
involvement of residents and the business community in the quality
of life we all enjoy.
A
business-friendly atmosphere must be credited to visionary county
and city government leaders, who understand that an area’s economic
base is a direct reflection of its business and industrial
communities. A diversified tax base allows our residents to enjoy
splendid public services without paying the high taxes that many
cities of our size require.
